Make up Tutorial Effect

Make-up tutorial effect. Here's the few easy steps to make up a face with WOW effect.

Press Q key, then select Brush tool, usually round, with 0% hardness and desired diameter, depending on the picture. Then start ot draw the face, EXCEPT the eyes, the nostrils and the mouth. Usuallu - skin only. Avoid, also, the ears.
Note that the red zones you are making now will be selected areas agter you finish making the face red with the brush tool.

When you are ready pres again the Q key. All the area, exept the red, will be selected

Then:
Menu-Select-Inverse - so to inverse the selection
Menu-Select-Modify-Feather - and choose an appropriate range for feathering, depending on the size and quality of the picture. Here i used 10px.

Then:
Menu-Filter-Blur-Gaussian blur and choose an appropriate range, so the face looks like glass, but either not too much, and not too less. Tip: zoom it and take a look at the minor spots - then decrease ot increase the blur level so eventually it looks perfect

Make the background visible and devrease the opacity of the duplicated layer if you think it is too much unreal. Everything depends on how you see it.

Flattern image /right mouse click on the background layer and select Flattern image/, so it will be ready for the make up

Add new layer and set it to Soft light, then choose a brush tool and choose black colour. Then begin to draw an eye line around the eye. Don't forget the other eye.

After finishing drawing the eye lines go to Menu-filter-Blur-gaussian blur and select the appropriate range, uslually a small px, so the eye line looks real. You can decrease the opacity of the new layer you are using now, so it looks even more real

Make up around eyes:
From here all the technical steps are equal, they differ only by colour and opacity.
Eye make up: open a new layer and set it ot soft light. Choose the desired colour for the eye make-up. Note, that in Soft light mode of the layer colours are very different than the real one - lighter nad not that intense like the real one, so mind it.
After completing the drawing around eyes go to Menu - Filter - Blur - Gaussian blur so it looks more real and if you want decrease the opacity of the layer

Lips/lipstic
open a new layer, set it to Soft light and choose colour. Draw carefully the lips. If you want you can draw a lip line with a colour a little bit darker than the main, so the lips look really sexy. When you are ready follow again the Blur-Gaussian blur filter, but ming that too much pixels of the gaussian blur will cause the colour to spread outside the lips, so make it right. Decrease the opacity of the layer, so the colour don't look that intense.

Make up of cheek-bones and whitening the "T"-zones.
This is very important part if you want the face look realy amazing. Those are real make-up tips and tricks and now we are going to make them with photoshop.
I will separate the steps in 2 parts - white and black part. The all go the same technical way.
White step
open a new layer, set it to Soft light and choose the whitest possible colour.
With the brush tool start drawing the lower part of the forehead, the nose, the cheeks /without the sculss/, the chin and a spot above the lips.
It will look like that before the blur steps

After applyong the white parts go to Filter-Blur-Gaussian blur and note that you have to find the border between too much white and too much spread of the white. Something like this

After that you can decrease the opacity of the layer so it looks more real.

Black step.
The same as the white one, but choose the blakest possible colour and draw only the cheek-bones
It will lokk like this befor the blur steps:

After that apply Filter-Blur-Gaussian blur so it looks real
Something like this:

Decrease the opacity.

Flattern image if you havent done it so far. Then shoose Lasso tool and set it to "Add to selection"

Shaprening the eyes, nose and lips

Then draw circles around the eyes, nose and lips

Ahter that go to Menu-Select-Modify-Feather so the selection won't be that sharp. Then press Ctrl+Alt+J so the selected area paste in new layer.
After that make the background layer invisible, so only the new layer with the selected parts stay:

After that go to Filter-Sharpen-Unsharp mask and choose the amount depending on the quality of the picture, so the higher quality-higher amount, not less than 100%. You will notice that the area sharpens.

Then make the background layer visible and flattern image.

Usually the magazines use that colour filters to make the picture look perfect
Go to Menu-Image-Adjustments-Colour balance and drag the Cyan and Blue sliders so the image lokks more blue and cyan:

Final Cyan-Blue filter steps

Finally you will get something like this:

Important: The Sharpening step and the Cyan/Blue steps are really the final steps. It is not good to continue adding anything after that, so if there are things you want to do you should do them before the final two steps :)

Some may also view it as a color of wealth because of its closeness in shade to gold. In Japan, yellow is a particularly important color because it is associated with royal family and stands for courage.

There is also a down side to yellow. Yellow can symbolize illness (because of jaundice), caution, and cowardice. During the Middle Ages, yellow – like green – was associated with the devil, as well as with death. In Egypt, yellow represents grief and mourning.

Clearly, getting dumped by “The Bachelor” wins a loyal vote, but throughout the competition she has struggled with conveying more than just a bubbly smile.

The Season 8 "Dancing with the Stars" finale airs Monday, May 18 at 8pm ET on ABC and everyone is wondering who will win. It is a tight competition, but I’ve crunched my own personal numbers and have decided who I believe will be taking that beautiful Mirror Ball Trophy home on Tuesday night.

Kung Fu Panda Wallpaper Tutorial

In this tutorial we will try to create wallpaper on one of 3D cartoons ‘Kung Fu Panda’.

Make a new document with the resolution 1900×1200 fro this tutorial. Select some appropriate colors, for example colors of #6d0000, #540000 and drag a linear gradient.

For the relief effect apply Filter > Texture > Texturizer with similar settings to these:

Now we have a relief like this:

Then we bring picture of Panda to our wallpaper. Actually you can use different pictures heroes of this cartoon. I prefer to use this one:

The next step what we need to add a lines to the background. Make selection with Polygonal Lasso Tool and fill our selection with a black color like on a picture below:

Press Ctrl+D to deselect chosen area and set up fill of 20% for this layer, then duplicate it with Layer > Duplicate layer. Now, head into the Blending Options for new layer, so right-click your layer and go into the Blending Options and apply the following layer styles:

Outer Glow

Stroke

Then set up fill of 0% for this layer. Create new layer with Layer > New > Layer and press Ctrl+J to merge with layer under.

Alright, now we need to cut away inner part of these lines. To do this, first get out the Elliptical Marquee Tool, then select an area, feather selection using Select > Modify > Feather (Feather Rarius of 100 pixels) and press Delete. We receive a picture like so:

Now we would like to make more contrast between Panda and background. What we want to do is apply Ellipse Tool to make a sphere as on a picture below:

For the image jitter apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with 95 pixels of Radius. Then mess with the layer mode & opacity/fill. I tried Overlay with an opacity of 55%.

The next step what do we need to add some shadow on the floor under the Panda. Make selection with Polygonal Lasso Tool and fill our selection with a black color like on a picture below:

For the blur effect apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with 14 pixels of Radius and set up opacity of 70%.

Now let’s add some text. Get out the horizontal type tool (just the regular one) and write out something like ‘Kung Fu Panda’ on two lines. For ‘Kung Fu’ use color of # eb3d1f and for ‘Panda’ use this one # ffcb20.

It will be more interesting to warp text like this:

Go to type layer with ‘Kung Fu’ and apply the following warp text properties:

For type layer ‘Panda’ warp text properties will be the next:

Now we need to rasterize text lines for the next transform, so right-click your layer and chose Rasterize Type. After press Ctrl+T to make free transformation, as on a picture below:

To add color shadow for lines press Ctrl+J to duplicate it and swap colors of lines, then press Ctrl+T again to transform lower duplicated layers like this:

For the relief effect apply Filter > Texture > Texturizer with similar settings to these:

Now we have a relief like this:

We can add shadow to upper text line to make text more realistic. Duplicate it with Layer > Duplicate Layer and apply Edit > Transform > Distort.

After get out the Rectangular Marquee Tool, then select an area, feather selection using Select > Modify > Feather (Feather Rarius of 12 pixels).

Then delete shadow inside the selection and press Ctrl+D to deselect chosen area. Set up opacity of 60% for this layer. We receive a picture like so:

To bring our text lines more brightness apply Ellipse Tool to make a sphere as on a picture below:

To blur this ellipse apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with 25 pixels of Radius. Then Set up opacity of 50%.

OK, to finish off with wallpaper I think we should add some graphic elements in the background.
For example we can use Japanese brushes:

Here are the steps to create an effecive logo that has ribbons appear in a planet shape.

Create a new document. Use the elliptical marquee tool to create a blue circle.

Load the selection of the layer and move it over until it looks like that below.

After you delete this selection, it will look like this below.

Use the elliptical marquee tool to create a green oval.

Move this selection up a bit

Delete the selection, and rotate the layer a little through the use of the transform tool.

Load the selection of the green layer. Then go to Layer > Modify > Expand. Expand by 5 pixels. Then select the original blue layer, and delete the selection.

Use the elliptical marquee tool to create a magent oval approximately the same width as the green one.

Using the same method in the last two steps, you will get the resultant graphic below.

Once again, select the elliptical marquee tool and fill an oval selection with orange.

Transform the selection a little bit and move it over. Delete that portion of the layer.

And the result is below.

Move and rotate (Ctrl + T) the layers a little bit to straighten everything out.

Complete step #7 except this time, use the orange layer first, and then delete from the blue layer.

To finalize your logo, add your company text below with any other symbols you wish. The final product is below.

Photoshop Tutorial: Great Gooey Photoshop Text Tutorial

Step 1 – Canvas

It’s important for this tutorial that you set up the same size canvas as the effects we’ll apply will vary depending on how many pixels it’s across. To use in smaller or bigger projects you will need to tweak the settings applied throughout this tutorial. Set up a 2500 X 1500 pixel, RGB document at 300dpi.

Step 2 – Texting

Select the Horizontal Type Tool, set the colour to a lightish grey and write your word. It’s best to use a fairly uncomplicated and bold font, I’ve gone for Avant Garde in Bold. Adjust the tracking to 50 as we’ll need space in between letters to allow for gooey growth. Press CTRL+T or go to Edit > Free Transform and resize your text by holding the SHIFT key (to maintain aspect ratio) and pulling one of the corner points with the mouse.

Step 3 – Ready the Tools

Select the Pen Tool and set it Shape Layers. Set the foreground colour to 40C, 10M, 100Y, 0K. Zoom into 100% and you are now ready to draw.

Step 4 – Drawing

Draw your first point at the start of the first letter. The best way to draw a curve is to position one anchor point at the origin of the curve and one at the end point or point at which the curve changes. To split an anchor point you hold the ALT key and click on the last drawn anchor point. This will delete the outward part of the handle and allow you to draw another one in (on the same anchor point) at any angle without altering the direction of the inward handle. This splitting technique allows for sharp angles following a curve.

Step 5 – Editing your points

Continue drawing loosely around the shape, adding some drips at the bottom to mimic gravity. Use the Direct Selection Tool (Behind the Path Selection Tool if you hold the mouse button) to manipulate the anchor points and the curve handles. In order to create an elongated bulbous end at the bottom of a drip you’ll need to pull the bottom facing handles out further. At any point if you’re not happy with the position or angle of your point, you can manipulate it with the Direct Selection Tool.

Step 6 – Best foot forward

I find it’s easier to draw the drips from top to bottom (following the gravitational pull) so once you hit the bottom of the letter, use the Direct Selection Tool to click anywhere on the canvas. Then select the first point (at the top of the letter) with the Pen Tool and draw in the rest. Something I forgot to mention earlier is to set the fill at 80% so you can see the letter underneath.

Step 7 – Subtracting

To get the hole in letters such as ‘O’ or ‘A’ you’ll need to set the Pen Tool to Subtract from shape area. Draw the outer shape of the ‘O’ and close off the path. Select the path thumbnail so that it highlights the path, set the Pen Tool to Subtract from shape area and draw in where the hole should be.

Step 8 – Finishing off

Complete the rest of the letters and set the Fill for each layer at 100%.

Step 9 – Inner Shadow

Select the ‘G’ layer and go to Layer > Layer Style > Inner shadow and setup as in the screen grab.

Step 10 – Inner Glow

Working on the same layer, select the Inner Glow setting and setup as in the screen grab.

Step 11 – Bevel and Emboss

Do the same with the Bevel and Emboss…

Step 12 – Satin

…And finally Satin.

Step 13 – Copy and paste

Select the ‘G’ layer and go to Layer > Layer Style > Copy Layer Style. Select the remaining letter layers and go to Layer > Layer Style > Paste Layer Style.

Step 14 – Ol’ Drippy

Draw in more drips on top of the letters. Copy and paste the Layer Style as before and go to Layer > Layer Style > Scale Effects… scale them back to fit the size of the drip, in this case it’s 40%. Then go to Layer > Layer Style > Inner Glow and scale the opacity back to 60%.

Step 15 – Rasterize and Mask

Create a new layer directly below the new drip you just drew. Select the drip and the blank layer and merge them (Layer > Merge Layers). Add a Layer Mask (Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal All) and use a soft-edged paintbrush loaded with black to mask off the top of the drip. Repeat this process until you’ve covered the word.

Step 16 – Depth

To add depth, draw some more drips beneath the letter layers. Copy, paste and scale the layer effects to save time.

Step 17 – Texture

It’s a good idea to add texture to the final text to make it feel more ‘real world’. You can either overlay an easily downloadable grunge texture or try the following method: Go to Filter > Noise and add a 2 pixel noise filter. Then go to Filter > Blur Gaussian Blur and apply a 0.6 pixel blur.

A Slick Supernatural Text Effect

In this tutorial we'll be creating a smoky night effect on text to give it an eerie supernatural sort of feel. It's a good exercise in using the Wave distortion filter...

Step 1

The first thing we need for our image is a background. We're going to use a quick star-sky background. There are lots of tutorials around for this effect, and it's actually a simple two-step process: clouds + noise.

So on a new blank canvas, start by choosing a dark blue color - #18323a - and black and then go to Filter > Render > Clouds.

Step 2

Now create a new layer, fill it with black, and go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise and use values roughly as shown below.

Step 3

Now that is way too much noise, so go to Image > Adjustment > Levels (or Ctrl+L) and bring those sliders together until you see most of the 'stars' vanish as shown.

Step 4

Now set the stars layer's blending mode to Screen so that the black vanishes and just the stars remain. It's still a bit too even though, so add a Layer Mask to the layer, and with a large fat brush just mask out blobs so that it seems a little less even. See the screenshot below to see the layer mask I added...

Step 5

In this step, I added a radial gradient layer going from the white in the center to black at the edges and set the layer to Overlay and 45% Opacity. The effect is just to darken the edges and it's not an essential step. In any case you should have something like this image shown below.

Step 6

Now we add our text. I've used a font called Cuez_Ver6 which looks suitably strange. If you go to a free font site and look under sci-fi or the like, you'll doubtless find something similar. Actually it's quite unreadable really (especially the r), but who cares, it looks cool!

Step 7

Next we're going to add some layer styles. You can get a sample PSD file at the end of this tutorial, but because we're switching to a pay system for the samples, I'll go through the settings in case you don't want to buy the file.

First I've given the text a Color Overlay of straight black (#000000). Then because the basis of this text effect is a creepy light, I added inner glows. First an Inner Glow as shown below, and then an Inner Shadow with color #54a4ff, blend mode Screen, distance 1, size 2, angle -90', and everything else default.

Step 8

Next we use a textured Bevel and Emboss to give the style some unevenness. You can see the Bevel settings below. The Texture I added is just one of the standard ones that comes with Photoshop that looks like bubbles. And I set the Depth to -79.

As you can see below, this makes the inner glow look a lot more uneven.

Step 9

Finally I added a Drop Shadow and Outer Glow, both set using Screen and the color #008ac5. I used both so that I could make one of them a small glow and one a really spread out glow, so the distances were 10px and 100px.

Step 10

Ok, so here's our text with the Layer Style applied. It's off to a good start, but you can only do so much with Layer Styles, so now we do some good ol' manual effects.

Step 11

First of all, duplicate the text, right-click the layer, and remove the layer styles. Then change the color of the text to a fluorescent blue (#5cdbff). Then press the up arrow once to move it one pixel up. This will give a sort of glow effect as shown below.

Step 12

Ok, this next step is the key step in this tutorial.

Duplicate the text layer with the fluoro blue color. Then go to Filter > Distort > Wave. You can use mostly the default settings, except where it has Scale. I've set this to just 10% and 10%. This will distort the text, but only a little bit. If you leave it at 100% the effect is pretty full-on!

(Note: In the image below, I moved the text down so that it would be clear that I was applying the wave filter to it.)

Step 13

After you have distorted text, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and use a value of 4px. Then set the Opacity to 20%.

In the screenshot below, I've switched off the main text so that you can see the distorted text.

Step 14

Now hold down Ctrl and click on that text layer to select it's pixels and then go to Select > Modify > Contract and use a value of 5px. Then press Shift+Ctrl+I to invert the selection and hit Delete. This should leave a thin wispy looking remnant of your text.

Now switch on the main text layer, and it should look like a tiny bit of smoke coming off the letters.

Step 15

Now duplicate that layer and go to Filter > Distort > Wave and distort this copy even more.

Now repeat this step a couple of times and vary what you do with the wave. So you might want to press Randomize sometimes, or sometimes distort the copy a few times. Also I used a mix of blending modes on the different copies of the smoke. Two of them I had no blending mode set, two of them I used Overlay, and for another two I used Hard Light.

Also it's a good idea to mix up whether they are behind or in front of the text. Remember you want the effect to look like wisps of smoke coming off the letters.

Step 16

Now that we have our small smoke sorted out, it's time to add some bigger wisps.

So again duplicate the fluoro blue text layer.

Step 17

We now apply another Wave distortion, but this time where it has Scale, set the horizontal to 5% and the vertical to 100%. This will make the shapes become very elongated as shown. Once you've applied the wave, just repeatedly hit Ctrl+F to keep doing it over and over again until the text has been completely distorted into long wispy shapes.

Step 18

Once you have a good smoky-looking effect, set the layer blending mode to Hard Light and you should have something similar to the image shown below.

Step 19

Now duplicate that last layer and run a Gaussian Blur by going to Filter > Render > Gaussian Blur with a value of 4px. This will make our layer look a little softer.

After that, get a large soft eraser brush and just brush away some of the bits at the bottom and top so that it fades off as it approaches the edges.

You may also want to repeat these last couple of steps to add more wisps.

Step 20

Here I've removed the bottom of those wisps and added a few more subtle copies. Also I added some extra type above the main text just to make it look a bit cooler.

Step 21

Next I moved one or two of the wispy layers in front of the text so that it looks like the smoke is trailing over the letters. In particular look at the E in super to see what I mean.

Step 22

Finally, to give it a more eerie feel I added a layer above all the others and with a large brush painted some green on top, then set the layer blending mode to Color to make it so that the image is a blue-green coloring. And we're done! One slick, smoky effect!

Take typography one step further by having text falling from the sky in a burning inferno. Yes, this is the text-on-fire tutorial to end all tutorials. It uses a little Illustrator for the text and a lot of Photoshop to burn up the screen!

It's always a good idea to keep your eyes open for inspiration for effects and designs no matter what you are doing. Graphics are everywhere and you can learn a lot by looking at what other people do.

Step 1

First create a new document and fill it with a dark grey.

Step 2

Create a new layer, call it "Clouds," and using the Lasso Tool (L), make a selection similar to the one I've shown below.

Set your background color to a 50% grey and the foreground to a dark grey. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds and, holding the Alt key, create clouds. After that go to Images > Adjustments > Levels, and change the input levels and output levels until you make the clouds neither too dark nor too light (see the image shown).

This layer will be on top of the others.

Step 3

Create another layer and repeat Step 2, but this time just change the background color from 50% gray to a blue or green color. This will create a small cloud, lighter than the big one.

Step 4

Now we'll switch to Adobe Illustrator to create some text. I used Times New Roman for the font. After that go to Effect > 3D > Extrude and Bevel. Now we will create the 3D text. Rotate the object and change the perspective. You can use the same values as I did (shown below).

Step 5

Copy the 3D text and paste it in Photoshop.
Place it in the center and add some Noise (Filter > Noise > Add Noise).
Now let's change the Layer Style. First add Bevel and Emboss.
After that, let's add a Gradient Overlay.

Step 6

Duplicate the Type layer and add a Motion Blur (Filter > Blur > Motion Blur).
Set the angle of the blur to -53.
Change the layer mode to Linear Dodge (Add).
Create a Folder, call it "Typo," and move these two layers into it.

Step 7

Create a new layer and repeat the Step 2, this time using a selection as shown going out the back of the letter T. This will create the trailing smoke.

Step 8 Creating the FIRE

1 - Create a new layer and call it "fire1."
2 - With the Elliptical Marquee Tool (M), create a selection.
3 - Set the background color to light grey and the background to black.
4 - Create clouds as we did in Step 2.
5 - Change the Levels to increase the contrast;
6 - Change the Hue/Saturation with Colorize selected until you get an orange/yellow color.

Step 9

Create a new layer, call it "blazes," and repeat Step 8. After that, duplicate the layer and call it "flames." Create a folder and move the Fire1, Blazes, and Flames layers to this folder and call the whole folder "Fire." It will be on top of the Typo layer.

Step 10

Select the layer "blazes" and go to Filter > Liquefy. There select the Turbulence Tool (T). Now, on the edges of the fire, start creating some blazes. Use it like you would the smudge tool.

Set 11

After the Liquefy, go to Edit > Transform > Warp and change the blaze's form to something similar to the image below. After that apply Filter > Sharpen > Sharp.

Step 12

Create a new layer and call it "yellow color."
Create an ellipse selection with 30px feather and fill it with white.
After that edit the Layer Style and apply a Color Overlay using an yellow color and Multiply for the layer's blend mode.

Step 13

The order and the Blend modes for the fire are:

Flames: Lighter Color
Blazes: Normal
Fire1: Lighten
Yellow Color: Multiply

Step 14 Sparks

For the sparks we will use brushes. Create a folder and call it "Sparks." It will be on top of the Fire folder.

Inside the folder, add a new layer.
Fill it with black and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge.
Select the Brush Tool and let's create a brush.
In Brush Tip Shape, change the Diameter to 12, and increase the spacing.
Select Scattering and set Scatter to the 1000% and Control to off. Change the Count to 2 and Count Jitter to 100%.
Select white and start painting some sparks.

Step 15

Create a new layer and repeat the Step 14 but now change the Scatter Option to 0%. Start creating some single line sparks like swirls.

Step 16

Here I used the Gomedia Spraypaint brushes to create those tiny little sparks, but you can repeat the step 14 changing the Brush size only. Basically, create a new layer, put it behind the others, fill it with black, change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge, see the color to white, and create the sparks.

One of the best features of Photoshop is the Layer Styles. We can create all sorts of effects – plastic, glass, water, ice, metal, and many more. In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a gold text effect. I will use only Layer Styles, and once our new style is created, we will be able to save the style and apply it wherever we want.

Step 1

Create a new document, apply a Layer Style on the background layer. Add a Gradient Overlay from black to a dark brown (#443501).

Step 2

Create a new Layer and apply Filter>Texture>Texturizer. Make sure that the foreground color is white and the background is black. After that, change the Blend Mode to Multiply.

Step 3

Add some text. I used Times New Roman, and for the "A" I used the "V" letter and flipped it vertically and horizontally.

Step 4

Now we start creating our gold layer style. We'll set up the Gradient Overlay first, as shown below.

Step 5

Now we'll add a Stroke. For the Fill Type use Gradient. The position of the gradient will vary for different typefaces, so experiment and see what looks good.

Step 6

Add Bevel and Emboss, as shown below.

Step 7

Finally, add some Shadow, again following the specs below.

Conclusion

This a very nice example of how powerful Layer Styles are in Photoshop. Sometimes just changing some values can create a totally different effect. For this tutorial I created gold, but if you change the gradient color to variations of grey you will have silver instead of gold.

How to Put Smokin’ Bullet Holes and a Wanted Sign into a Piece of Wood

This tutorial is like three tutorials rolled into one. We're going to make an awesome wood emboss effect, put bullet holes into the wood, and finally smoke 'em up to a gnarly Wyatt-Earp-just-walked-past look.

Step 1

So here's the image we're going to be creating, it's a sort of Wild West wood sign with some bullet holes for extra effect.

Step 2

First up, we need a wood texture. I used the excellent EveryStockPhoto search tool that searches a bunch of free stock image banks to find an image. We have to be particularly careful here on PSDTUTS because of usage agreements and what not. This image is from ImageAfter (SRC) who kindly allow you to use their images in commercial projects, yay!

Step 3

So here's my lovely wood texture!

Step 4

First, we need some text. In a new layer, add your text in a nice brown color (#803508). The color is important because we're going to set it to Multiply to get a nice darkening of the wood texture behind it.

The font I've used is Anatole Display SSi, it's kind of Western-looking without being too over the top. Use whatever you please.

Step 5

Basically, next I added a whole bunch of layer styles. Here's how it comes out; in the next step I'll show you all the styles I applied.

Before we get to the styles though, there are two settings you need to apply:

Set the Fill of the layer to 90%. (If you're not sure what Fill is, it's right below Opacity. Opacity controls how transparent everything on the layer is, while Fill controls how transparent only the layer and not the layer styles are)
Set the layer blending mode to Multiply

Step 6

Ok there are a bazillion styles here. The main points to take away are:

Drop Shadow — I've used the drop shadow in an unusual way here. It's set to put a 1px highlight on the bottom right. This is where the light (which in this example we're going to have coming from the top left) hits the edge.
Inner Shadow — I've used the inner shadow to make it seem like the text is stamped on to the wood.
Inner Glow — This is used to give a general stamped-in look on top of the inner shadow.
Bevel / Emboss — I've used this to double-over the drop shadow highlight and give it even more of an embossed feel.
Gradient Overlay — This is used just to give a bit of variation in the color of the item it's applied to.

And of course, if you're too lazy to copy that many styles, you can always buy the sample PSD and just copy them :-)

Step 7

Now this is looking pretty good. One problem, though, is it's a bit too clean cut. It would be nicer if the text looked a bit worn down. To do that, we'll apply a Displacement map. Actually, we're going to do this step quite a few times over during the rest of the tutorial, so it's quite important to learn (and quite simple).

Step 8

First, create a new file and paste in the wood texture. Press Ctrl+Shift+U to desaturate it and then save it as Displacement.psd

Step 9

Now back on the main file, duplicate the Wanted text. Rasterize one copy by going to Layer > Rasterize > Type. Then set the other non-rasterized layer to 40% Fill. Then switch it off for the time being so it doesn't get in the way. Now back to the rasterized version, go to Filter > Distort > Displace and use values of 5 and 5 for the scale as shown below. Press OK and then it will ask you what file to use as the displacement map, choose Displacement.psd from the previous step.

You can read a bit about displacement maps and how they work in this post at Worth1000. They can be quite powerful. For our purposes, we're mainly using them to roughen up edges to match the background.

Step 10

Now we switch the other non-rasterized layer back on, and together they make a rougher-looking version of the original.

Step 11

Now I wanted to add some shapes and more text to embellish my wanted text. I used Photoshop shapes like stars and added some extra text below. Then I just copied steps 4-10 for each one.

The one difference is that because the objects/text is smaller, I adjusted the layer styles to suit. So, for example, I made the inner shadow 1px instead of 3px for the distance, and so on.

Step 12

So here we are. It's looking pretty cool already! But to make this image really kick, we're going to need a bit more bazoomph!

At this point, I selected all the layers so far except the background wood texture and stuck them in a Layer Group and called it Wanted Text or something like that. The utility of this is that I can now switch it on or off while doing the other parts of the image without it getting in the way. I suggest you do the same.

Step 13

So with the Wanted Text group switched off for the time being, it's time to make the bullet holes.

First, we create two new layers. On the lower one, we draw a largish circle of grey. Then in the upper layer, we draw a smaller circle of black. You should have something like shown.

The idea here is the black bit will be the actual hole, the grey bit is going to be the roughed-up wood texture around the hole.

Step 14

Now we need some neat layer styles to make this work. Here I've applied them already; in the next steps I'll show you the actual settings.

Note that the bullet-hole part is set to Normal and 100% Opacity / Fill, but the outer circle is set to Screen, 100% Opacity, 30% Fill.

Step 15

For the bullet hole part it's really simple, we use an Emboss with these settings. Note that the highlight I've used a beige color that I picked out of the wood texture so it would match.

Step 16

The back layer is more complicated. The main points to notice are:

I've used the Drop Shadow in the same way as with the text earlier (i.e. to create a highlight) but much fainter this time
I've used Color Overlay to lighten it up
I've used the Gradient to make it seem indented
I've used Inner Shadow to generally make it seem depressed

Step 17

Now that we've got our main bullet hole, I suggest making a layer group out of it, then duplicating this layer group. Because all our bullet holes need to look different, we need a bunch of these and then we apply some randomizing stuff (like displacement maps and wave distortions) to each of them, in turn, to make them different.

So duplicate the pair of layers. Then select the black hole layer and go to Filter > Distort > Displace. Again use the same Displacement.psd as your map. This time I set the scale to 10,10.

Step 18

Next, we select the back layer and apple a Filters > Distort > Wave transform. You may need to fiddle with the settings, as you don't want to distort it too much. I've never fully understood the wave tool, I just move sliders around and press Randomize a lot until I get the look I want ... makes you wonder if I should be teaching Photoshop really :-)

Step 19

After that, apply a Filters > Distort > Displace to this backing layer too. This time use a scale of 50,50 to make it really rough (see image).

Additionally, I found that because of the wood texture it actually looked best when I placed the bullet holes on the natural grooves of the wood. You can see an example below where I have the same bullet hole layers in two different places on the wood. The right one looks more natural because it uses the texture to good effect.

Step 20

Now we do this whole bullet thing a few times over. Make sure to move them around and then use the displacement maps so that they come out differently. Also make sure to press "Randomize" on the wave distortion so again they come out differently. Here's what I've got now...

Step 21

One drawback to the current image is it looks flat, so it'd be a good idea to apply a bit of lighting and shadow. I put all the bullet layers into a Layer Group called Bullets, and then in a brand new layer above all the others, we draw a Radial Gradient going from White to Transparency as shown.

Step 22

I then set that layer to Overlay and 50% Opacity, then duplicated it and set the duplicate to Soft Light and 50%. This gave me a nice subtle lighting as shown below.

Step 23

Next, I duplicated the very back texture layer, pressed Ctrl+Shift+U to desaturate, placed it above all the other layers, then set the layer to Overlay and 40% opacity. This basically ups the contrast on the image.

Step 24

This is it so far — already looking much better!

Step 25

Now create one more layer above the others and draw a Radial Gradient going from white to black, looking something like this. You don't want too much black because that's going to be the shadowy part.

Step 26

We set this latest layer to Soft Light and 50% Opacity, and finally we have a nice lighting effect. All of a sudden our image is really coming to life.

Step 27

We have one last mission, and that is to add smoke! For this effect we're going to use the smoky effect from my previous Slick Supernatural Text Effect tutorial.

First create a new layer and with a small soft brush, just draw in some wavy lines like shown.

Step 28

Next, we go to Filters > Distort > Wave and mess about to make a nice wave distortion. When that's done we press Ctrl+F to redo the same filter (the wave) again a couple of times to make it look even more distorted. Occasionally use the eraser to erase bits that are looking weird.

Step 29

Basically, we repeat those steps over a few times, fade out the layer, do it again with another one, and you'll get some small smoky waves like this.

Just keep going and make a bunch more to add to the other bullet holes. You can learn a bit more about the effect in the supernatural tutorial that I linked to earlier.

Final Image

And voila! One awesome Wild West Photoshopped-to-the-max image. Hope you enjoyed the tutorial and learned something useful, or failing that, at least found out where to get good wood textures :-)

Design Soft Stylized 3D Type

The use of 3D type is an increasing trend in design today. Creating such type usually requires advanced 3D software. Not all of us own such software, nor know how to use it. In this tutorial, I will teach you the basics of creating polished 3D type using Illustrator and Photoshop.

Step 1

Open up Illustrator and with the Type Tool, type some text. I used the font Bifurk, which is available to download for free. I used this font because nice thick fonts work best with this effect. Using a thin font usually yields poorer results. The font size has been set to 77pt. Don't worry about the font size too much. We'll be using Smart Objects, so we can adjust the size at any given time.

Step 2

Now change the color to white. If you don't like not being able to see your text, you can simply use a different background. Next go to Effect>3D>Extrude & Bevel. Use the settings shown below, making sure to open up ore options, and make sure that Preview is on.

Step 3

Time to migrate your work to Photoshop. Simply copy and paste the artwork (or drag it from one canvas to the other). I prefer to use Smart Objects. You can now resize your text to whatever size you want. In fact, the bigger the better. For the purposes of this tutorial, I will stick to a relatively small canvas. I placed the image on a blue background, so it's easier to work with than white on white.

Step 4

Now the magic happens! Use the Settings below to apply Layer Styles to the text. The result follows the settings images.

Step 5

Let's go over the top with this design. After all, this is a funky style we're creating here. Ctrl-Click your text layer to obtain a selection. Next, on a new layer add a smooth black to white gradient. Set the layer mode to Soft Light, and the Opacity to 40%. This creates some awesome contrast.

I also want to add some shadows so that my text sits on a surface. Select a low Opacity (around 20%) and a small-sized soft, black brush. Then brush a shadow below the text on a new lower layer. The further away you get from the text, the fewer strokes you should use. If you feel your shadow needs a blur then go to filter>blur>Gaussian blur. Use a value that seems appropriate to you. It's a basic shadow, nothing too fancy.

Step 6

You could call it a day and stop here, or you could go on. Duplicate the smart object and rasterize it by going to (Layer > Rasterize > Smart Object). Hide the bottom smart object. Now go to the Clone Stamp Tool. Get a nice irregular brush, like a spatter brush, or something similar. Then clone some parts of the text. This creates a sweet broken-up effect. Be careful not to overdo the effect though.

Step 7

I'm going to add more elements. Instead of glowing swirls, I'm going to add what I like to call :road marks". Perhaps the proper term would be "pinstripes". I use the Pen Tool to create a shape that has the proper perspective (this is all by eye), and then I fill it with white. This enhances that illusion of a surface. You can tweak it with a mask and a low-opacity brush—fading some parts creates a sweet effect.

Step 8

Lens flares are underestimated. When used well, they help to enhance the effect of a glowing object. Create a new layer on top of everything else, and fill it with black. Go to Filter > Render > Lens Flare. Go for the 105mm prime. Put it a tad off center, so you get a nice beam shooting out of it. Set the layer mode to screen. Perhaps you noticed that if you move the layer around, you can see a harsh edge at the end of the lens flare. Simply erase it with a soft eraser or mask it with a soft brush. You can regulate the layer's opacity in order to control the intensity of the effect.

Step 9

Let's add some color to the type now. Create a new layer on top of everything else. Grab a fuzzy, medium-sized brush, and set it to a color like (#e02c97). Start brushing the bottom of your type. When you are done, Ctrl-click on the layer where your type is located, so that a selection is visible around the type. Now hit the layer mask button at the bottom of the Layers palette. This should remove all the color that is outside the bounds of the text. Next, you should set this layer to soft light.

Step 10

Let's work some more on the background. Create a new document that is 40px by 2px. Make sure that the background is set to transparent. Now fill half of the document (20px) with black. Go to edit > define pattern. Then save this new pattern.

Step 11

Return to your original project. On a new layer, located below your type layer, go to edit > fill. Set the use field to Pattern. From the patterns available, select your freshly made custom pattern from the previous step. Now hit OK. The whole canvas should fill with a bunch of stripes.

Now go to edit > transform > perspective. Take the lower-left anchor point, and while holding Shift, drag it outwards and to the left. Keep doing this until the stripes seem to match the orientation of the shadow. This adds to the 3D effect in the design.

Finally, I changed the layer mode to Soft Light. With a low-opacity brush and a mask, I added some texture to the whole thing. I also removed parts of the line patterns to focus the design with a mask.

Step 12

Next we'll create the rings. Take the Ellipse Tool and set it to paths instead of shape layers. Now make a nice circle (hold Shift to create a circle). Then stroke it with a 2px brush. Now you have one ring. Duplicate this layer, decrease it's size, and repeat this process about four more times. Now you have a bunch of rings. Merge all these layers. Then add a default glow, but with the color changed to white. Then add a lens flare on top, as we did earlier. For the fancy effect I used a mask (yes, again), and I got rid of a portion of the rings.

Step 13

The next things to do are add the clouds and the 'smoke' below the letters. The clouds are from a stock image from Stock.Xchng. After downloading and importing the image, I heavily masked and duplicated it. Play around and see what happens. Every outcome is different with this one. The smoke was created with the same techniques as can be found at the beginning of the Flaming Meteor Text Effect tutorial by Fabio.

Conclusion

Add a new layer below our "Pinstripe" layer. Then create a pink gradient, which goes from top to bottom, and fades to transparent about halfway down. And we're done!

You've learned to create 3D style text without the use of advanced 3D software. There are many options available when creating a design like this. This kind of 3D text really looks great on posters or when blended into urban or nature scenery. Once learned, this technique can yield spectacular results. Enjoy!

Create a Spectacular Grass Text Effect in Photoshop

Ever wanted to make text out of grass? Well with Photoshop you can. In this tutorial we'll create a rather cool-looking grass-text effect using a photo of grass, the Pen Tool and a bit of patience.

This is the first of a five-part set of tutorials where we'll use Photoshop to make text out of all sorts of things. So let's get ready to Photoshop!

The End Effect

I like to begin tutorials by showing where we're going. So without further ado, here is the final grass-text image click to see the full 1920px x 1200px size.

Part 1—The Background

This tutorial is made up of three parts—the background, the text itself, and some final extra effects. So first of all we're going to make a background. To do this we create a new document in Photoshop. I made mine 1920 x 1200 because I want this image to sit on my laptop background.

We start by drawing a Radial Gradient with the Gradient Tool (G) going from a light yellow-green (#adbf41) to a mid-range green (#328a26). I wonder if I've ever written a tutorial that doesn't start with a radial gradient. :-)

Step 2

Now for this image we want to create a really textured background, faintly resembling paper. So the first thing we need is ... a paper texture!

Happily you can grab some really awesome grungy paper textures from Bittbox and they are nice and large too, which is good because this is a huge canvas.

So I can't remember which texture I used first, but grab one, desaturate it (Ctrl+Shift+U) and stretch it over the top to fit the canvas.

Step 3

Now we set the layer to Overlay and 70% Opacity to blend the texture with our nice green background.

Step 4

Now to get a really distressed look, I then copied this layer, spun it around 180' and set it to 20%. Then I brought in a few more layers of paper texture (using different textures, mostly from Bittbox) and set them all to faint overlays, one on top of the other.

This was partly for the extra distress, but also because I realised that the textures looked a bit grainy and not small and sharp. So by combining extra textures and then fading it all back, I can get a nicer, sharper overall look.

Anyhow as you can see in the screenshot there are six layers here. Don't forget if you are a Plus member you can download the PSD file for this tutorial and take a look in there yourself!

Step 5

Now I duplicated the original background gradient, placed the duplicate layer above all the textures and set it to 40% Opacity—this tones back the texture so it's not quite so grungy!

Step 6

Now we create a new layer over the top and using a large, soft, black brush, add some black to the edges. It's worth toning back the opacity to about 30% and Overlay. You can then duplicate the layer and run a heavy Gaussian Blur over it (set to about 32px). That way the edges really soften out.

Step 7

OK, we now have a nice background!

Part 2—Grass Text!

OK, we are now ready to make some grass text. To do that, we're going to need some nice pretty grass to cut. After a lot of searching, I finally found this lovely photo on Flickr of grass.

So download the image at full-size and copy it on to your canvas.

Step 9

Next we need some type. So select a font you want to cut out with. I chose Swiss 924BT, which is fat and condensed type. I thought it looked nice and grand. And I've written the text "EARTH". That's because I'm making five of these wallpapers—earth, water, fire, air, spirit ... it's like that cartoon I used to watch as a kid, Captain Planet!

Anyways, so just set your text out in white and set it to Overlay and like 50% Opacity. This layer won't actually show in the end, it's just a guide layer.

Step 10

OK, so here's the text on top of the grass we got earlier.

Now a bit of planning! To make text out of grass, it's not going to be enough just to stencil out the grass. Rather we need it to look all rough, with bits of grass sticking out the edges. To do that, we're going to use the letter shapes as a rough guide and then trace roughly around them and periodically jut out to trace around blades of grass.

I'll warn you now, it's very tiresome!

Step 11

OK, so here we are tracing. You should use the Pen Tool (P) and frankly, if you're not handy with it before you start, you will be by the end!

Notice how in the parts where my path juts out, it sort of follows individual blades of grass. That way when you have the final cut-out they will look like pieces of grass sticking out.

Step 12

When you've finished your path, it's best to save it in the Paths Palette. You can do this by switching to that palette and then clicking the little down arrow and choosing Save Path. That way if you need the path again later, you can grab it.

Anyhow, double-click the path to get the selection and go back to your grass layer. Duplicate the grass layer so you still have more grass for the other letters, then invert your selection (Ctrl+Shift+I) and cut away the excess grass. In the screenshot I've faded back the duplicate grass layer so you can see the cut out "E" part.

Step 13

OK, so here we have our "E" on the final bakcground. As you can see, it looks only slightly better than if we'd just used the letter to stencil out the grass without bothering to trace. But that's OK, what it needs is a bit more depth. After all, if that letter was really sitting there, we should see some shadow and sides to it.

Step 14

First of all though, we'll add some layer styling to give it a bit more of a three dimensional look. The styles are shown below.

Now duplicate that layer, then clear the layer style off the duplicate, so we can add some more styles. This time add the styles shown below...

Here's the second set of layer styles... (Note that it's 51% Opacity so it'll blend in with the previous layer)

Step 16

So this was all just experimental, and it kinda looks OK, but obviously has a long way to go. Now we'll add some shadow. For that we'll use a technique that I demonstrated in a previous tutorial, Using Light and Shade to Bring Text to Life

The idea is to make a three dimensional look. So Ctrl-click the grass layer and then in a new layer below, fill it with black. Then press the down arrow once and the right arrow once and fill it again, then repeat over and over until you get an effect like that shown. I think that was about 15 steps of filling.

Step 17

Now we run a Filter > Blur > Motion Blur on our shadow with a 45' angle and a distance of about 30. Then set the text to a low opacity of about 50%. You should have something that looks like the screenshot below.

Step 18

Now move the shadow layer down and to the right and magic happens! All of a sudden it looks like the letter is casting a shadow. Pretty neat!

Step 19

Now I duplicated this layer three times. Each time I erased a bit of it away so that as the shadow is closer to the text it gets darker. I set these layers to Multiply.

Step 20

So this text is looking pretty cool, but for that extra bit of depth we should add some bits of grass in the background/shadow area. Rather than cutting out more grass, we can just use this current letter transformed about so that it's not obvious that we're hacking it together.

So as you can see below I created a few pieces of grass. They are just cut up bits of our main letter.

Step 21

Now by moving those pieces into the shadow areas, we can make it look like there is grass sticking out and it's a real 3D object made from grass!

Because these new grass bits are in shadow, you might want to use the Burn Tool (O) to darken them appropriately.

So yay, one letter down ... four to go! Good thing we didn't choose a long word like erm I don't know ... laborious!

And finally, the whole word! The only extra thing I did here was to move the letters apart a little. Each letter is in its own Layer Group which makes moving it around much easier.

Part 3—The Finish!

Now nice as it's looking, our text is a little lonely and monotonous. So in this last section we'll add a few more elements to the design. Note we don't want to overdo it, though, because I want this to be a desktop background, so space it is important (for all my icons!).

So first up, let's add some extra text. Here I've placed a nice quote about the earth and unity taken from the Baha'i faith (that's my religion!). I love quotes, because it means we get three parts to decorate—the quote, the quotation marks and the source.

The text is in a variation of Swiss which is thinner, but still condensed. Using multiple fonts from the same family (heavy, light, etc) is a good, safe bet for keeping your type looking coherent.

So here I've set the quote to Overlay and 50%, then duplicated the text and set it to Screen and 50%. Then I've added quotation marks in the same Swiss font, but made them extra large and a bright shade of green. Finally, the source of the quote is in teeny letters and centered vertically. And, of course, the whole quote has been measured out so it's exactly the length of the main "EARTH" text.

Step 27

Next we'll add a bit of a highlight to the scene. To do this, create a new layer above all the rest, and using the Gradient Tool (G), draw a gradient of white -> transparent towards the top left. Then set this layer to Soft Light and 50%. This will turn it into a nice subtle bit of lighting.

Step 28

Now we'll add two eye-catching elements to offset all the green. These will be a brilliant blue butterfly and a little red ladybug. I used the excellent everystockphoto Web site that searches a ton of free stock Web sites for you to find two awesome images to use: Ladybug | Butterfly

Step 29

Placing the images is pretty easy. First the butterfly. We just open up the image in Photoshop, use the Magic Wand Tool (W) to select all the white area, then go to Select > Modify > Expand and expand the selection by 1px to make sure we've got it all. Then press Ctrl+Shift+I to invert the selection and copy the butterfly over to our main canvas.

The ladybug I selected needs to be cut out of it's image. To do that I used the Pen Tool (P) and traced around the little guy and then just cut him out that way.

Step 30

So here are our two extras. As you can see, the lady bug looks a bit weird actually because I did a quick'n'dirty job of cutting him out. But that's OK because he's going to be tiny so you won't be able to see the details anyway.

So paste them in and then shrink them down and place them appropriately. It's best if they aren't close together, because that way they'll balance each other.

I added a drop shadow to each. With the ladybug it's a very close shadow because he's small and walking on the grass. With the butterfly, I set the distance to about 10px because he's hovering in the air and therefore the shadow lands a little ways away.

Finished!

And there we have it, one neat little composition featuring text made out of grass! (Click for the full-size version)

6 Quick’n'Dirty Photoshop Text Effects From Scratch

Photoshop is great for embellishing display text with little effects. When you add layer styles into the equation, you have the added benefit of the styles being easily transferable. In this tutorialshow you how to make six different effects using just layer styles. So really this is like six tutorials in one!

Quick Gold Text

There are a lot of ways to make "gold" text. This one makes use of two layers with the exact same text on it. They are layered on top of each other with the bottom layer a few pixels down so that it gives an illusion of 3 dimenions.

The font we're using here is Trajan—a very elegant typeface that suits gold text.

First the top layer, which is made with the usual suspects—a bevel, a gradient overlay, and so on. Note the faint drop shadow that actually gets applied to the layer below it (which then has its own drop shadow).

This is the layer that gives the depth to our letters. Notice that the interior bit is not important because it gets covered by our gold plating layer above. It uses an Outer Bevel on top of a fat Stroke to create the highlights. Then when we place the other layer on top they come together to make a lovely gold effect!

There are a lot of ways to make "gold" text. This one makes use of two layers.

3D Metallic Text

This effect is actually just a variation on the gold text. As you can see below, we've again used the dual copies of the text, each with layer styles applied. Here I used a different Gloss Contour on the beveled text below, and of course everywhere we used a yellow shade in the last effect, I used a grey color here.

To try something slightly different, I also applied a text warp. You can do this by clicking on to the text layer, selecting the Horizontal Type Tool (T) and then an icon appears at the top (shown below) that you click on. This gives the Warp Text dialog box.

Now if you apply a Bulge to one of the layers, but not the other, you get a slight distortion that looks neat.

DoubleType

This effect is much simpler and just relies on having two versions of the text, one styled and one not. I've used Futura as my typeface here. I believe I saw this effect on a movie poster once so I've used red the way they did, but it works just as well with other colors and combinations.

All there is to do is apply two bits of layer styling:

Add a 1px Outer Stroke using a gradient instead of a color. I've used one of Photoshop's metallic gradients (see the thin metal style further down for more details). It gives the edges a shiny quality that's nice.
Then we add a black to white Gradient Overlay to the text set to Overlay and 50%. This means when you change the text color it automatically adjusts so it has a nice bit of shading over the top.

HyperColor

This effect I discovered at Chris Garrett Media's site where he uses it to great effect. It's a very simple effect really, you just grab some text (typeface is DIN in this example) and give it a Gradient Overlay. Photoshop has some really nice Color Harmony gradients that you can add by clicking on that little arrow that points to the right on the Gradient Editor dialog box. The gradients it adds are the bunch at the bottom. If you choose one of those and set it to about 59% on white text, set on a dark background.

Thin Metal

This is the simplest way to make a metallic effect. It relies on the fact that when you see metal in real life, it's usually got lots of highlights and shadows, especially shinier, chromier type metals. So by using two copies of the same gradient at different angles you can make this effect happen really easily and give your text a metallic effect.

It's best on a thin typeface because otherwise the interior of the text looks dull and flat (unless of course we added more styling, but then it wouldn't be super quick!)

So first of all I decided to make my text 'stand up' in this example. So just create a layer below your text and draw tiny circles of black below the points of each letter. Then blur them by going to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set it to about 2px. Then hit Ctrl+T and squash them vertically. Finally set them to about 30% Opacity so they are nice and faded out.

For letters like the a and e where there is a larger area of the letter touching the 'floor', you can use the transform tool to stretch the circle our horizontally.

Finally I duplicated one of my circle shadows and stretched it waay out so that it went underneath the whole bit of text to make the overall shadow.

Experiment and you should be able to create some neat little pools of shadow under the letters.

Now the actual text is just a combination of a Gradient Overlay and a 1px Stroke that uses the same gradient. The gradient we use (and it's the same as in the Double Type effect above) is a metallic gradient that comes with Photoshop. You can add this to your gradients palette, using that little right arrow shown in the Gradient Editor below, then choose Metals and you should see it appear.

The key here is to make sure the Angle on the overlay and the stroke is different. This is what creates the highlights on the text that you can see in the close up screenshot above.

I also set the main overlay to just 14% Opacity over the top of some grey text so that it was a little faded out, but that's optional.

Plastic Fantastic

I love these gel-type text styles, though I must admit I don't think I've ever actually used one in a real design. But who cares, they are so fun to make. This one uses two copies of the text and two different layer styles (similar to our first two metal texts earlier).

You can see the two layers below. The main styling is done in the bottom layer, while the top one is used to create that shine effect.

In the bottom layer we've used a bunch of glows, altered shadows, and gradient overlays. You can see the actual settings further below.

In this layer I've heavily modified a Bevel and Emboss style to create that sharp-edged highlight. Again, you can see the exact settings, including the shape of the gradient contour below.

Dramatic Text on Fire Effect in Photoshop

Flames are particularly hard to render in Photoshop, but in this tutorial I'll show you how to use a photograph of fire to set text to the match. We'll render the look on a nice dark background with a gorgeous text effect to complete the image.

This is the second of our five-part series on Photoshop Typography.

The End Effect

As always we'll begin with the final result, so you can see where we're going. It's on a nice big canvas so it can serve as the desktop background on my laptop for the next week or so! click to see the full 1920px x 1200px size.

Part 1—The Background

So create a new document in Photoshop at 1920px wide x 1200px high, and with the Gradient Tool (G), draw in a radial gradient of browns (#5c3d09 to #1f1409) so you get something like what is shown below.

Notice that the gradient is not centered vertically but sits toward the top. In this image we want the top of the text to be on fire, so the top part of the image should be a bit more lit up.

Step 2

As in the grass text tutorial, once again we're going to have a textured background. But rather than starting from scratch, I just copied the background from the previous tutorial, merged all the layers and desaturated to get what you see below.

If you need to make this from scratch, first visit Bittbox to get the original paper textures and then follow the previous tutorial's steps.

Step 3

Now we set the layer to Overlay and to blend the texture into the background and voila!

Step 4

Just to add a bit more texture though, let's run the Texturizer filter. To do this, create a new layer and fill it with a brown/beige color—#66500f. Then go to Filter > Texture > Texturizer and use the Canvas texture with 80% Scaling and Relief set to 4.

Step 5

Once you have your texturized layer, set that to Overlay. This adds some extra fine detail to our texture which is good because we're working on such a big canvas.

Step 6

Next we're going to apply a layer to slightly desaturate the bottom half of the image. This is so that the top looks like it has a warmer glow where the flames are, while the bottom looks a little colder.

So create a new layer and fill it with the color #4b4f3b. Then add a layer mask with a gradient to mask out the top and fade down (so you get the effect shown).

Now set the layer to Color and 45% Opacity.

Part 2—Text + Glow = Awesomeness

OK, we now have a nice background! So let's add some text. I've used the font Trajan because it's a really dramatic looking font. Here I've placed the text in the color #cb9328, then set it to Linear Dodge (Add) with an Opacity of 8%.

What we're going to be doing with our text is making it look like the top half of the text is coming out of the background and is red hot with flames flickering off. This means we're going to run a lot of effects and apply layer masks to them so that only the top half shows while the bottom half reverts to faded out text like we have currently.

Step 8

So first create a new layer group to put all the text layers in—because there will be a lot of them.

Then duplicate the text layer and set the color of the duplicate text to #5e3f1c.

Step 9

Now set the newest text layer to Overlay and 70% Opacity. It should look kind of reddish (as shown below).

Step 10

Now duplicate the text again and set the latest duplicate to a yellowish color—#cb9328. Then set this to Linear Dodge (Add) and Opacity 30%.

Next we add a layer mask and draw a gradient so the latest text layer fades out as shown below, and beneath you can see the reddish colored combination of the bottom two text layers.

Step 11

Next we duplicate the text layer yet again, but put this layer right on the bottom. Set the color to black—#000000. Then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and it will ask you to rasterize the text, click yes to that, and then set the Radius to about 4px.

Then Ctrl-click any of the other text layers and go back to the black layer and hit delete so you are just left with a sort of shadow. Then duplicate this layer and merge it with the first so the effect is heavier. You should have something that looks like the screenshot below.

Step 12

Once again, add a layer mask so the shadow quickly fades out as shown. This makes it look like the text is coming out of the page.

Step 13

Now duplicate our black layer again and using the Smudge Tool (R) and a largish soft brush you want to just smudge the shadow around so it looks like burn marks.

Step 14

Here's how our text is looking now. I actually created two sets of "burn" marks, and then four sets of the shadow layer each blurred a little more than the last and each faded back.

Step 15

Now it's time to make the top part of our text glow. So first of all, duplicate the text layer again and place this layer at the very top and set it to a yellow color—#dc9a08.

Then run a Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur over it with Radius of 8px. Then grab a large soft eraser brush and just erase away parts at the bottom so it's kind of uneven.

Step 16

Set our first glow layer to Soft Light. You might want to repeat the process, erasing even more so the top part is even glowier.

Step 17

Now duplicate the text layer yet again and place this at the very top. This one should be again the same yellow (#dc9a08).

Then go to Layer > Rasterize > Type and turn the text into a flat graphic. Then Ctrl-click the layer and go to Select > Modify > Contract and use a value of 1px. Then press Delete to delete everything except that 1px outline.

Step 18

Now set the 1px layer to Overlay, and you should have something like the image below.

Step 19

Now to our 1px glow add a layer mask to fade it out down the bottom as we've been doing with the other layers.

Then duplicate the layer, and run a Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur set to 1px. Then duplicate this layer again and blur it by 2px. Then duplicate the layer again and blur it by 4px.

Then Ctrl-click any of the text layers, press Ctrl+Shift+I to inverse the selection and go through each of the glow layers and press Delete to remove any of the blur that has strayed out of the boundary of the text.

The idea is that we want the edges of the text to look red-hot with it fading in to an overall hot glow on the text.

Step 20

Next we duplicate all four of the glow layers and merge them together. This should result in a layer on top which is the original bright yellow.

Grab the Smudge Tool and run over the text, smudging it up to look like heat waves coming off the text, as shown.

Step 21

Now set this latest layer to Overlay and you should have something looking like this!

Now we've pretty much finished our text. I went through and duplicated some of the glow layers to make it look even more fiery. Feel free to experiment with getting a real red-hot glow look by doing so.

Step 23

Next, in keeping with the last wallpaper, I've gone and added a quote underneath my main text. This provides a nice embellishment to the page. Try to use colors that fit in with the background and text layer so it doesn't stand out too much, because we really want this to be a secondary element to the main text. I've used Swiss Light Condensed as my font and laid it out just like in the previous Grass Text tutorial.

Part 3—The Flames

Finally, with all our preparation done, it's time to add the actual flames! For this, we need some images of fire set against a plain black background. A good photo is hard to find, and try as I did, I couldn't find a really great free photo. So in the end I used this photo from Fotolia which you can purchase using the link below. There was also an OK photo from Flickr which I've also linked to and which I ended up using later for the "E". So you might want to grab that too.

Now the technique for copying the flames over is actually really simple. I actually only learned this technique recently when reading one of Nik Ainley's tutorials for DigitalArts magazine called Create Amazing Photomontages where he did it with water.

What you need to do is:

Open up the flame image in Photoshop
Go to the Channels tab and find the channel with the highest contrast, which for images of fire should be the Red Channel, and click on it
This will make your image appear black and white, and because we're on the highest contrast layer, it will seem really bright white. Now Ctrl-click this channel and it will select all the pixels in that channel.
Click back to the RGB channel and copy the selected pixels
You can now paste the flames into your main canvas!

This is actually a really, really useful technique for copying something translucent like fire off a flat background. And as you'll see by visiting Nik's tutorial, it's also great for copying water!

Step 25

OK, so here we've pasted the flames on to our main canvas. (For clarity I've also temporarily switched off the text layers). As you can see, we've got the fire without the black background and it's partially transparent, which means it'll look super on top of our text.

Step 26

Now the next thing to do is to cut up our one bit of fire into a few pieces. Just duplicate the layer and switch off one as a backup first. Then using the Pen Tool, cut up the fire so you work with the contours of the flame so it looks natural. Here you can see I've produced four pieces of flame from the one image. You can also try flipping bits around to make them seem more random.

Set the layers to Screen mode so that any remaining black parts are totally gone, and it's even more transparent.

Step 27

Now because my text is just four letters, I need four separate pieces of fire. For the fourth one (on top of the E) I actually grabbed that Flickr photo and repeated the same process as earlier to create another flame. Also the fire on the letter I has been squashed a little as well to make it look more random.

Step 28

Applying the fire is really as easy as moving the flames over the text. You want to try to match the flames to the shape of the letter so it looks like they are dancing off the letters.

OK here I've placed all four bits of flame over the top. It's not bad, but you can see that the I and the R have the same flame and also all the flames aren't very tall.

Step 30

So here I've gone through each flame and using the Transform Tool stretched them vertically. Also I used a bit of judicious erasing to make the flame on the I look a little more unique.

Step 31

Now to make them look even more lit up, duplicate each flame layer, run a Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur with a Radius of 3px and set the layer to 15% Opacity so it provides a bit of glow around the edges of the flames.

So we're pretty much there! This is how the composition looks.

Finally we'll add a last highlight. So create a new layer above all the others and draw in a white to black radial gradient as shown. Set this layer to Overlay and 40% Opacity.

Finished!

And there we have it, a text on fire effect! In the next tutorial in the series, we'll be producing the Air image, however it'll be in two weeks, not one—as I'm taking a few days off work!
